App description

SpeakThat! is a free and open-source Android app that reads your incoming notifications out loud using text-to-speech. Unlike alternatives, SpeakThat gives you COMPLETE control over what gets read and what doesn't.

Why SpeakThat!?

- Open-Source (With the source code available on GitHub, you can verify SpeakThat’s privacy claims and contribute towards it)

- 100% Free (SpeakThat is free for everyone. And when I say free - I mean free. No subscriptions, no ads, no purchases of any kind)

- Entirely Local (All processing happens on your device. No external servers, no data harvesting, and no AI)

- Private Mode (Set individual notifications to Private Mode. This means their app name will be read out, but their notification content won’t)

- App Filtering (Decide exactly which apps get read out and which will always remain silent via the Whitelist/Blacklist)

- Word Filter (Blacklist certain words to prevent notifications containing them from being read out, or swap words entirely)

- Content Cap (Limit readouts to a word count, sentence count, or time limit. Great for obnoxiously long notifications like emails)

- URL Handling (Announce web links either in full, their domain name only, or replace all web links with your own custom text)

- Custom App Names (If an app name sounds unnatural in speech, swap it with a replacement for readouts... I will not mention any names!)

- Voice Options (Full control over pitch, speed, TTS language and audio stream for maximum flexibility)

- Shake to Stop (Cancel a readout by shaking your device. The sensitivity can be adjusted to suit your needs)

- Wave to Stop (Cover your device’s proximity sensor to cancel ongoing readouts. This is perfect for desk environments)

- Delay Before Readout (Give your notification tone some breathing room by adding a small delay before SpeakThat begins talking)

- Notifications (Optionally display a persistent notification indicating when SpeakThat is active or just when it’s speaking)

- Smart Logic (Conditional Rules allow you even finer control, such as specific behaviour when Bluetooth is connected)

- Automation Apps (SpeakThat works with automation apps like Tasker or MacroDroid, and provides shortcuts for easy setup)

- Save/Load Settings (Tweaked SpeakThat perfectly but now you’re switching phones? Save your settings and load them on your new device)

- Speech Formatting (Customise how the readouts are structured. Write your own sentence with placeholders for the app name and content)

- TTS Engines (Use external text-to-speech engines if Android’s default one isn’t doing it for you. This gives you control over the voice used)

- Language Support (Crowd-sourced translations are constantly being added. Feel free to help translate SpeakThat into your language)

- Diagnostics (With so much customisation, things can sometimes break. That’s why SpeakThat features built-in diagnostics tools)

- Support (Need help? Don’t we all. An unpaid guy in his bedroom is responsive to emails and willing to help you. Hint: It’s me...)

- Modern Design (Using the Material design system, SpeakThat has an intuitive design for its user interface. Customising is easy)

SpeakThat does not send your data anywhere unless you submit a bug report (and even then it's optional!) The app operates *entirely* on your device - no cloud processing, no data collection, no external servers. What happens on your phone, stays on your phone.

Accessibility Service
SpeakThat can be granted the Accessibility service for increased reliability and some extra features enabling more ways to interact with ongoing readouts. This is entirely opt-in and not required for the app to function. It is a convenience feature for those who need it.

Perfect for accessibility, drivers & commuters, athletes & fitness enthusiasts busy professionals, parents and caregivers, and anyone who wants a smarter relationship with their phone.
